The disadvantages faced by small companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange and the reasons for the volatility in their stock prices are discussed. Alternative stock markets like Newcastle Stock Exchange and Australian Pacific Exchange are now operating to present these stocks in a favorable light. The advantages of tailor made rules being offered by these markets are analyzed.

Greg Pound, the chief accountant at that the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) states that ASIC would take enforcement action on companies that refuse to accept its views on accounting rules and have a history of accounting irregularities. The companies would not know if they are being checked unless ASIC perceives a problem.
