Straw Hats in the Winter
Article Abstract:
Al Simon is an analyst who specializes in the brokerage industry stocks. In an interview he discusses the major brokerage firms' current positions and their potential for 1984. Deregulation of the industry has provided more competition from other industries, like banking and insurance. Simon does not see much threat to the brokerage industry from these sources, but he admits that the discount brokers have cut into full-service houses' client base. He sees the industry as basically cyclical. Simon believes the industry is near the end of the cycle now. Revenue and earnings have declined, stock prices are way down and costs are being cut. In this environment he believes these companies will do very well when the market turns up again. A list comparing all the companies he discussed is included, as are his recommendations.
