Superconducting lives

Article Abstract:

Hypres is working to commercialize a form of superconductivity despite the reports that there are some problems with the new generation of higher-temperature superconductors, those which carry electricity with zero resistance at temperatures as high as 292 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Hypres uses Josephson junctions, which act as switches to control the flow of electrons and are very sensitive to magnetic fields, to make its superconducting integrated circuit. The circuit consists of 50 Josephson junctions on a portion of a chip that is supercooled with a steady spray of liquid helium. The chip is an essential component of Hypres' supersensitive oscilloscope used to test military radar and computer switches. The knowledge gained from making such chips is being applied to making chips that operate at even higher temperatures.
