Task performance, perceived competence, and attributed causes of performance as determinants of intrinsic motivation
Article Abstract:
A study of the relationship between external incentives, internal motivation and task performance employed 43 undergraduates in a Star Trek computer simulation. Subjects were asked to complete the simulation: without compensation, for a set fee, and for a performance-based fee. The three groups studied revealed that performance was not affected by external incentives. However, performance was affected by subjects' attitudes toward competence and performance feedback, as well as their relative loci of control (internal vs. external).

Additive information processing and the relationship between expectancy of success and motivational force
Article Abstract:
It has been suggested that increases in levels of success expectancy results only in modest increases in employee motivation. Five diverse groups were studied and data were extracted from laboratory conditions as well. In total, 228 individuals participated in the study groups. Findings show that the expectancy force model is not supported by empirical evidence, since in many cases, individuals were highly motivated and their expectancy of success was very small or zero.
