Tears in the toy shop

Article Abstract:

The lessons from the drastic changes in fortunes and market share of Toys "R" Us are presented. The toy company that was nearly bankrupt in 1978 saw an upturn when its market share rose to 25% in 1988 only to be followed by steady decline that finally drove it to sell itself in 2003. The difficulties encountered by the company in maintaining competitive advantage are discussed.
