Early signs of a shifting economy

Australia's Top 500 companies, as compiled by Business Review Weekly, have grown from 6.3% of Australia's revenue in 1994 to just over 7% in 1999. The Top 500's labor force represents 3.3% of the national workforce. New South Wales and Western Australia grew most in terms revenue share on the list, increasing by 37.7% and 10.6%, respectively. Property services fell from 8.7% of total revenue in 1994 to 6.2% in 1999. Cultural and recreational services account for 11% of revenue on the list, and the telecommunications/technology services sector represents 39% of listed revenue, up from 25% in 1994.
