The Computer Takes Its Rightful Place in the Office

Article Abstract:

The tenth annual IOACC computer conference and exhibit in Melbourne explored not only the technical aspects of computers but the commercial and management applications and user interaction. 'Fifth generation' technology was a conference buzz word along with 'voice recognition' and 'optical disks'. Microcomputers and their networking were major features. Exhibitors displayed products from security devices to systems supporting 100 terminals. A number of hardware and software product introductions are listed.

Furniture That Adapts to the User

Article Abstract:

The Zucomat chair, contoured for the back, has a swing back and adjustable height. Namco is designing a range of chairs from stools and stacking chairs to executive chairs. Data Decor of Melbourne offers a data processing desk with adjustable height. Danish Design Centre has a $2300 workstation with leaves for conversion to conference table. Hoods Galore and IBM Synergetix workstations both have screen and keyboard desks that are individually adjustable. Photographs of the models are included.

A 170 per cent increase in the number of business computers in use in the next two years is expected. Buyers are cautioned to stick with reputable dealers and to become familar with computer jargon. Selling will intensify as computer companies reach for a larger market through individual and retail outlets. Software packaging will increase. Large storage capacity, greater speed and increased networking are part of the computer industry picture.
