360 degree feedback: is it right for us?

Article Abstract:

Great enthusiasm has been expressed about 360 degree feedback for appraisal. However, it is important to consider whether a system of 360 degree feedback is suitable for every organization. This issue must be addressed within the context of extensive organizational change. It must be recognized that 360 degree feedback requires an environment and culture of trust and support. If this environment does not exist, managers will be unwilling to abandon control over the traditional appraisal process. 360 degree feedback may not be successful if implemented without support systems for employees.
