The US takeover of the UK electricity supply industry
Article Abstract:
The plethora of mergers and acquisitions that is creating market concentration in most industries has become a popular strategic tool for promoting corporate objectives. Research studies have shown that such takeover strategies are usually motivated by the desire for efficiency, managerial considerations, target undervaluation, and taxation considerations. The significance of these four motivators was illustrated through an examination of the mergers and acquisitions by American utilities within the British electricity supply industry. The utilities were found to be influenced by a combination of the aforementioned motivators, confirming the beneficial impact of their strategies on their revenues, growth potential, opportunity to learn, potential to adopt expert knowledge and risk diversification. The buyers also reported that they complied with the Drucker's rules for success.
