The evolution of a local R&D strategy: the experience of a service in the UK National Health Service (NHS)

Article Abstract:

The authors examine the experiences of the mental health service hospital trust in Nottingham, United Kingdom, in bidding for research and development grants. Through a reassessment of research strategy and methodologies, the hospital trust was able to bid successfully, and the long-term implications of the reassessment results are discussed.

The concept of combinative capabilities is explained, including the logic of combining resources in order to leverage them. Company levels on which combinations can be anticipated are identified, and methods for applying them to commercial ends are delineated.
