Article Abstract:

The conflict on personal taxes in Australia between Prime Minister John Howard and treasurer Peter Costello is discussed. Prime Minister is willing to offer a better deal to the rich, but Costello is not willing to risk the ire of lower-income earners. Implications of this disagreement for personal tax reforms that are being anticipated in the coming budget are discussed. The need to cut down personal taxes is also discussed.
