New South Wales politician Ian Armstrong already has a membership on the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG), but he could assume full charge of the games if the March 1999 vote in New South Wales changes the government. Armstrong is an outspoken rural politician who says he is ready to lead the effort. As Olympics Minister, he says he would open up the committee's contracting process.

Will NSW buy a used Carr?

The oft-maligned Bob Carr Labor Party administration in New South Wales may have an upper hand over the Liberal-National opposition in the polls next March. Recent Nielsen-McNair opinion polls give Carr a 40% approval rating as Premier and a voter intention poll shows support for the Labor party. Carr's chances for reelection increase because the Opposition's leaders have been ineffective.

Seeds for a Carr-go cult

New South Wales Labor Premier Bob Carr may have a credibility problem as a result of disagreements between him and his party on economic issues. He sees himself as a pragmatic economic manager but feels he has not gotten credit for his work in that capacity. Carr did not win agreement on a plan to eliminate tolls on the M4 and M5 freeways and a plan to privatize the state's power assets.
