The neglect of engineering design

Article Abstract:

To regain competitiveness in many discrete product markets, it is essential that the U.S. improve its engineering design practices. Although roughly 80% of manufacturing costs are committed during the first 20% of the design process, U.S. management has focused almost exclusively on "downstream" manufacturing operations to effect cost and quality improvements. This article reexamines the role of engineering design education programs, research efforts, and the design knowledge tools and practices used in manufacturing firms. To fully utilize engineering design as a competitiveness weapon, the U.S. must build a new engineering design infrastructure by expanding design research, revitalizing design education, and revolutionizing engineering design practice. In order to grow, must the founder go: a comparison of performance between founder and non-founder managed high-growth manufacturing firms

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine whether the stereotype of founder managed firms (FCEO) were managed less professionally than non-founder managed firms (NFCEO). The study made use of 155 companies found in the 100 fastest growing firms publicly held firms in America. One hundred ten were FCEO firms while 45 were NFCEO firms. The study made use of 11 variables to measure performance and the t-test was used to determine significance. Results indicate the stereotype is unfounded. There was no significant difference between the two samples.
