Entrepreneur brings auctions on-line in new bid at success
Article Abstract:
Former GO Corp leader Jerry Kaplan has formed Onsale Inc to offer an online auction of used computer equipment over the Internet. Users access the company's Web site and post bids for the equipment. The bids are posted immediately and other users can respond to them, frequently resulting in frenzied bidding contests. Items frequently sell for more than their retail price. Onsale is one of the few Internet start-up companies that is actually making money. About 36,000 bids are placed per week, resulting in about $700,000 in revenue for Onsale. The company verifies credit card numbers before allowing users to place bids. Onsale either charges the purchaser for the goods and sends the manufacturer a share of the money or forwards the order directly to the vendor and charges a commission. Onsale expects $35 million in profits for its first year.

Computer experts see hackers gaining an upper hand in fight over security
Article Abstract:
Experts in computer security say that they are losing the war against hackers who penetrate private and public computer systems. Government experts say that methods previously employed to keep hackers from breaching computer security are now not strong enough to keep them out. This lack of data security is of particular concern as companies invest in links to the Internet at a rapid pace. GE, Sprint and IBM are among the companies that have recently had security intrusions through their connections to the Internet. Hackers are even distributing software on the Internet that helps other hackers to penetrate security systems. Analysts say that companies that are going to be linked to the Internet should take every security precaution they can but also should be aware that the Internet is not going to provide guaranteed safety.
