Chip maker Cyrix, Intel rival, plans $25.4 million IPO

Article Abstract:

Cyrix Corp plans an initial public offering of worth $25.4 million by offering about 2 million shares of common stock at $13 to $15 apiece. The company may use the proceeds of the sale to buy a minority interest in a chip plant owned by SGS-Thomson Microelectronics NV. Currently, Cyrix contracts out all chip manufacturing. This reliance on outside manufacturers threatens the prospects for growth at Cyrix, which designs clones of Intel Corp's 386 and 486 microprocessors. Cyrix' preliminary Securities and Exchange Commission filing reveals for the first time a conflict with Texas Instruments (TI) over manufacturing and licensing issues. That conflict could give TI rights to sell current and future Cyrix products. That turn of events might harm Cyrix' effort to build brand-name identity. TI has threatened to sue over the tiff.

Technology IPO feeding frenzy sends prices of new issues soaring

Article Abstract:

Technology stocks are currently selling well as IPOs (initial public offerings) and are being purchased by mutual funds and other institutional buyers before they come to market. Experts say its an issuer's market as demand is riding much higher than supply. A battle is underway for semiconductor and software IPOs and some experts are saying the signs of a top are developing. Premisys Communications, which recently introduced a two million-share offering, is one of the most popular technology offerings. The company could have sold 40 times the amount they offered, according to analysts and fund managers. The shares came to market on Apr 5, 1995 at $16, $3 above the top of the company's target, and in only seven trading days the stock has risen to $39.75.
