Union revives 'subbie' tax battle

Article Abstract:

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has resurfaced the issue of personal services companies using incorporation as a means to avoid the PAYE tax. CFMEU claimed that of the 200,000 contractors using the prescribed payments system, about 150,000 are employees in disguise. If contractors paid tax at the same rate as PAYE employees in 1996-97, an extra $2.2 billion would have been raised.
