Article Abstract:

Multiwall bag manufacturer Werthan Packaging Inc (WPI) was able to improve its finances and overall operations by replacing its outmoded management information systems (MIS) and changing its performance measures in the early 1990s. As a result of the total upgrade of the company's MIS, which involved a 13-step process, the company was able to restructure, simplify and integrate the corporate business system applications; and is now equipped with the needed tools supporting corporate-improvement processes in the future. Particularly, WPI can now engage in monthly financial projections, shorten financial statement turnaround time and enjoy efficient cost accounting support. Moreover, WPI has become a model for other manufacturers attempting to convert their own system.

First Credit Union Home Banking Provides Members Access to Data

Article Abstract:

The Dayton, Ohio-based NCR Universal Credit Union is the first in the country to offer a home banking service. Begun in August 1983, the Companion-At-Home system provides account information and delivers credit union news, financial data, and messages. In addition, members can transfer funds between accounts. Within a year, the Credit Union plans to add a bill-paying service. The service costs four dollar per month, plus nine cents per minute for each access. The system can be accessed by virtually any dumb terminal or home computer. A photograph of a user accessing the system is included.
