Article Abstract:

Virgin Group's Richard Branson is currently fighting a 72-year old restriction which prevents foreigners from controlling domestic airlines. The British entrepreneur is planning to start a low-cost domestic airline concentrating in the the eastern U.S. called Virgin America. Although Branson is confident that he will be able to lift the restriction, pointing out the current concern that domestic airlines lack competition, the battle could not be easy. Domestic airlines are unwilling to give up the protection the restriction provides, unless they are given, in turn, increased access to foreign markets.
