WA rides out the changes

Western Australia's economy continues to function in spite of the disasters in Asia. The iron mines have switched to exporting cheaper ore, and Japan has increased its dependence on Australian ore. Several petroleum companies have moved into large offices, and oil and gas projects are expected to grow. Gold mines have coped by slashing costs and postponing new exploration.

A silver lining at last for resources

Article Abstract:

The Australian resources sector is likely to perform well in 2000. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics forecasts a further 45% rise in the price of nickel and a 13% rise in the price of copper, and oil is also set to do well.
