Water utility industry

Article Abstract:

Many of the smaller water utilities in the US are expected to consolidate with larger operations in order to become more efficient, maintain their systems, and better manage the costs of upgrading systems. Changes in the Safe Drinking Water Act are also expected to decrease the financial burdens of testing for trace elements to maintain high drinking water standards. These stocks are not timely for 1999 although several have dividend-growth prospects and good safety rankings.

Water utility industry

Article Abstract:

Congress is now considering the Safe Drinking Water Act and more costly and stronger demands on water utilities may be abated. Geographic diversity and growth are being sought by investor-owned companies through consolidation, thus reducing weather-related and other risks. Results for the 2nd quarter of 1995 were lower than expected by some companies. Dividends and returns make some stocks attractive over the next three to five years.

Water utility industry

Article Abstract:

Water utilities could see higher earnings and dividends because of the regulatory retrenchment undertaken by the Republican-dominated Congress. Financially well-off companies will benefit even more from new services and acquisitions. Although water utility stocks have underperformed the market and score low in timeliness, several promise attractive returns through 1997-99.
