Webvan taps Bechtel Group for facilities

Article Abstract:

Webvan Group Inc. has contracted with construction firm Bechtel Group Inc. to build 26 automated grocery ware- houses in as yet to be identified U.S. markets. The Foster City-based online grocer, in business for two years, serves about 10,000 accounts in the San Francisco Bay area, fewer customers than online rivals Peapod Inc. and Homegrocer.com Inc., yet has attracted over $100 million in venture capital. The additional round of funding brings the company's value close to $700 million, yet despite a 330,000 square-foot warehouse containing over four miles of conveyor belts, online competitors have expressed admiration as well as concern over the potential of Webvan.
