Western Australia has achieved privatization through new investment rather than selling off its power assets. State officials argue that moving towards privatization too quickly may cause big problems in the future. Furthermore, the state does not gain much from selling its power assets. Western Australia's finances are in good order and sales usually are designed to fit the financial needs of a government.

A government election will take place in Western Australia on February 10, 2001, and public opinion leans towards success for the Labor Party. The question whether the Labor Party or the incumbent Liberal-National coalition wins the election, however, is a moot point for business, as both parties are in favour of development.
