Alexis de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont traveled the US for nine months in 1831 and 1832 and viewed many sites. De Tocqueville compiled his thoughts and observations in the classic book, 'Democracy in America,' while de Beaumont compiled his in 'Marie, or Slavery in the United States.'
