A Wellcome development: Sheppard Robson's Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, officially opened today, uses ingenious modern solutions
Article Abstract:
Sheppard Robson was appointed to masterplan and design the genetic research campus at Hinxton Hall for the Wellcome Trust, a charity providing funding for bio-medical science. The external elevations were created in an L-shape, and to promote interaction between scientists, the east-west central spine corridor is wider at the entrance to the laboratories. The site features a hierarchy of meeting spaces, which includes seats in bay windows, tea and coffee points and the cafeteria.

Laboratory conditons: pathology buildings, and the processes which take place within them, can too easily prompt designs lacking warmth and human detail
Article Abstract:
The new pathology building at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary was designed by Tom Mellor and Partners, architects, who have already been involved on a major development of the Infirmary. The building is of L-shaped design with one wing housing laboratories and the other housing general administration offices and storage. Buff coloured concrete block and artificial slate are used externally, and internally, the laboratories benefit from natural light from the north.

Active and passive lab design: laboratories are typically heavily serviced. For Glasgow's Institute of Health Sciences, a double wall underlies significant passive design
Article Abstract:
Architect Reiach and Hall was keen to explore the potential for passive design for the lab area at the Institute of Health Sciences at the University of Strathclyde. The building features a double-skinned southerly glazed wall and the exposed concrete soffit in the labs makes thermal mass available. The structure provides window cleaning walkways, deeper shading is provided, as well as a secure layer, so that internal glazing can be opened for night cooling.
