Chechnya's resistance to Russia's military power has shown how weak a leader Boris Yeltsin really is. He could retain power by declaring a state of emergency, or be ousted by democrats or those who would fight against warring states more aggressively.

The ill-advised war in Chechnya, Russia, seemed to be the low point of Boris Yeltsin's political career, but in fact he remains firmly in charge and will be further aided by a scheduled $6.4 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund.
