A crop that refuses to die

Article Abstract:

Coca production has dropped in Peru and Bolivia, and the US sees this as a success story, but critics argue that other goala, such as US support for human rights and democracy have been sacrificed. Meanwhile, opium production is increasing in Colombia, and has spread to Peru, while coca production has increased in Colombia. The development of alternative crops involves aid, and a withdrawal of that aid is planned for Peru and Bolivia. This is likely to mean that farmers revert to their coca crops.
