A healthy increase in deal values

Article Abstract:

Transaction values have increased notably in Nordic countries during 1996-97, with major investments coming from UK-based venture capitalists. The largest buyout market by volume was Finland in 1997, with Norway recording the largest market by value. The sale of Helly Hansen raised $165 million in May 1997, while the sale of bulk refrigerated carrier Igens Larsen raised 80.6 million pounds sterling. The largest management buyout in Denmark was the sale of Thorn's retail division for 74.73 million pounds sterling in Sept 1997.

Showing a marked recovery

Article Abstract:

The number of Italian buyouts remained steady in 1997 at 22, although individual values increased the size of the market to double that of 1996. Italy has one of the smallest buyout markets in Europe with room to expand and develop. The Italian govenment introduced tax incentives to encourage floatations under the Tremoni Law of 1994. Italy suffers from economic and political instability which makes it unattractive to long-term investors, thus hampering the buyout market.
