Article Abstract:
Italy's much improved economy increases its prospects for becoming a founding member of EMU. It will be crucial for Italy to keep its deficit under control once it becomes a member of EMU. Italy has managed to lower its deficit to about 3% of its gross domestic product.

Article Abstract:
Prime Minister Lamberto Dini called for a vote of confidence after deputies refused to withdraw amendments that would have allegedly nullified his budget measure. The measure, designed to restore investor confidence, barely won the confidence motion.
