A landmark for Leith

Article Abstract:

The design of the new Scottish Office building at Victoria Quay, Leith, UK, has provided a new landmark for Leith and is also a vital first step in regenerating a rundown area. The 32,000 sq mt building is somewhat disappointing aesthetically and has made some compromises over design, but unlike most new government buildings it does at least show architectural aspirations. On the positive side, the building, which was designed by RMJM Scotland, is a low-energy building which is largely naturally lit and ventilated. It was also built and fitted out in an impressive 21 months.

Standing the test of time: New Zealand House, by Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall & Partners, forerunner of RMJM, still looks good after 34 years

Article Abstract:

New Zealand House in London was built 34 years ago, designed by architect Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall & Partners, forerunner of RMJM. It was designed with a walls of glass, but a compromise was reached when the Crown Estate objected, and there is floor to ceiling glazing on each storey, with spandrel panels of Portland stone. It was one of the buildings to have air conditioning, removing the need for opening windows. Aluminium extruded flashings were installed behind the stone cladding panels, to prevent leaks in the glazed facade.
