An economic blockade started by people indigenous to southern Bihar was an effort to create an independent state, Jharkand, but it ended in violence. The local people live in poverty in an industrial region, but education has made them politically aware and assertive.

Bombed but unbroken: India
Article Abstract:
Several sophisticated bombs have killed over 300 people in India. Most Hindus believe the bombs have been planted by Muslims hoping to bring social chaos and drive away foreign investments. However, the terrorism has failed to inspire riots or cause severe conflicts.
