A note on 'A discussion of testing DMUs' returns to scale' by Zhu and Shen: European Journal of Operational Research 81 (1995) 590-596

Article Abstract:

J. Zhu and Z.H. Shen's interpretation of the application of data envelopment analysis (DEA) method on decision-making-units' (DMU) returns scale is misleading. The application of the DEA method on DMU's returns scale implicitly assumes constant-to-returns-to-scale linear production technologies. Furthermore, in a constant-returns-to-scale technology, there are infinite mpss and it is not meaningful to use any information derived from the method contrary to Zhu and Shen's suggestions.

Estimating and bootstrapping Malmquist indices

Article Abstract:

A consistent bootstrap estimation methodology for deriving confidence intervals for Malmquist indices of productivity and their decomposition is presented. Although the exposition is based on input-oriented indices, the methods can be extended to the output orientation. The bootstrap technique extends ideas developed in a previous study by the authors to the case of Malmquist indices developed from nonparametric distance function estimates employing data from various periods.
