Italy's once-popular electoral reform referendum, one of nine ballot propositions to be submitted to a vote on Apr 18, 1993, may yet go down to defeat. The 12-line referendum is confusingly worded, and its endorsement by the leading political parties harms its chances.

Article Abstract:

Italy voted overwhelmingly for political reform in a referendum held Apr 18-19, 1993. Proposals to end state-financing of political parties and to end the Ministry of Participation won the highest approval ratings, which were over 90%.

Article Abstract:

A national referendum revealed that many Italians are frustrated with corrupt, inefficient government and believe that reform is due. Italy has the seventh largest economy in the world, but its political clout lags far behind.
