The banking industry changed radically during the 1970s, leading to confusion and poor risk management during the 1980s. Many banks and other financial institutions suffered fiscally, and a new awareness of international competition and the trend toward deregulation is needed.

Derivatives, or financial instruments designed to diversify investments and hedge risk have been used for some time, but they became particularly popular in recent years. A bank cannot be entirely risk averse, or it cannot make money, and derivatives can be complex.
