A room with a loo: Unearthed from obscurity, the WC has become a star turn in the world of interiors

Article Abstract:

The way in which architects deal with the essential space for the WC gives an insight into changing conventions and design trends and current environmental concerns. H.A.J. Lamb traced the history of the WC from 1350BC, and noted that by the end of the nineteenth century it was given a certain amount of dignity. He predicted that strict regulations with regard to the quantity of water used for flushing would limit future developments of the WC. Today, research into efficient waterless systems is being driven by water shortages.

Shanghai surprises

Article Abstract:

Restoration of China's former Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank building was carried out in 7 months by conservation and restoration specialist Donald Insall Associates (DIA). The 1924 building is regarded as China's first building constructed with a steel-frame and many alterations have been made to its structure. DIA discovered mosaic panels designed by George Murray, which proved to come from Italy with Indian varnish. DIA was called into carry out the restoration because China has little experience of such work.
