Article Abstract:
Maggie's Centre at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh is a centre for those diagnosed with cancer. The site comprised a small stone stable block and the conversion aimed to create an atmosphere of domesticity, incorporating as much accommodation as possible. The large entrance space is lit by a ridge rooflight and there are individual rooms, a kitchen, living room and two counselling and therapy rooms. A double staircase leads to a library and leaflet display and study area. Externally the nature of the stable block was preserved with glass block and Douglas fir screens sliding behind the original stable door openings. Article includes cost analysis and working details.

Architectural surgery: Phase 3 of ORMS's masterplan for the Institute of Child Health brings logic to a cramped urban site. It provides offices and teaching facilities as well as social areas which encourage the exchange of ideas
Article Abstract:
The Wellcome Trust Building is the third stage of ORMS's extension of the Institute of Child Health. It features a new 290-seat lecture theatre with a continental style seating arrangement, eliminating the need for central aisles. The glazed winter garden is the setting for a William Pye water sculpture, and the research floors, located above the conference areas, have a geometry sympathetic to the surrounding hospital buildings.
