A taxing choice for Nottingham

Article Abstract:

The three entries shortlisted for the Inland Revenue Nottingham competition show a successful merging of Modernism and traditional themes, and they have made strong efforts to address the issues involved in designing an extensive office development for a key position in a historic location. The scheme by Richard Rogers Partnership makes excellent use of passive environmental control systems, while Eldred Evans and David Shalev make full use of the site, including courtyards and gardens, and the design submitted by Michael Hopkins and Partners uses metal and masonry construction and best evokes the features of Victorian Nottingham.

Surgical precision

Article Abstract:

The new building for doctors in Glenavy, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, is an impressive piece of modern architecture. Architects Tim Ronalds and Gerard Maccreanor have drawn inspiration from the Modern Movement for their building on a narrow plot in the village high street. The building extends back behind an entrance gate, screened from the outside world to give a sense of privacy. The interior has been given a domestic quality with an open fireplace in the reception area. Large windows are used for natural light and to allow an interplay between the rooms and a series of courtyard gardens.
