A third term for Fujimori?

Article Abstract:

Peruvian president, Alberto Fujimori, is seeking a third term in office though third terms are banned by the constitution. Fujimori has argued that his initial term should be ignored since it was at the time of a different constitution. The Peruvian economy has been affected by low prices for minerals, problems in global financial markets, and the impact of El Nino, though there has been some recovery in 1999. Fujimori may benefit from his political opponents being weak.

Getting away with it: Peru

Article Abstract:

Pres Alberto Fujimori of Peru has dissolved the democratic government and has seized total power with the backing of the armed forces. The coup has been met with the stern disapproval of the Organization of American States, which fears similar moves throughout Latin America.

Article Abstract:

Fujimori's declared a state of emergency in April 1992 to deal with the economic crisis, effectively destroying any pretense of democracy. Most Peruvians do not care, however, since inflation dropped from 60% to 3.6%.
