AIG's status threatened

Article Abstract:

New York-based American International Group Inc., a financial-services company, may be required to sell part of its insurance operations in China in order to meet China's World Trade Organization commitments. The company is the only foreign-insurance company in China permitted 100% ownership of its life-insurance operations. China may take a much tougher stance on American, one of the oldest and most influential foreign investors in the country.

...And U.S. policy needs no illusions

Article Abstract:

Pres Clinton's policy of constructive engagement to China has not improved Sino-American relations. Disputes over Taiwan, human rights, Tibet, trade protectionism and technological espionage have remained unresolved. However, the US is still open to a more diplomatic relation with China because both share a common goal of maintaining a peaceful and cooperative international environment as members of the UN Security Council.

Article about how ten members of a Chinese delegation toured citrus groves and packing houses in Indian River County, Florida, last week, the final action before Florida can begin shipping fresh fruits to China, what is potentially the biggest citrus market in the world. The Chinese were interested in how the citrus industry detects and gets rid of pests.
