AIWA'S SECOND COMING

Aiwa Co. Ltd (Aiwa) had a marketing tie-up with Shaw Wallace Electronics earlier. It has tied up with Baron International (BI) for marketing its products in India now. BI had marketed Akai brand of consumer electronics successfully in India. BI does not have manufacturing facility and it prefers to be a marketing and distributing company. Aiwa and BI signed a five-year contract in August 1998, which will be renewed after three years. BI has committed a sales of one million units of audio and television sets in the first year. Audio systems will account for 2.5 lakh units in the first year of marketing alliance. BI has sold 10,923 mini hi-fi systems in October 1998. BI has projected a sales of Rs1,300 crore by June 1999 (financial year July-June). It has posted a sales of Rs40 crore in October 1998 and expects a sales of Rs60 crore in November 1998. BI plans to make Aiwa's hi-fi a commodity and increase the penetration level. BI offers free software with hi-fi systems. Advertising Avenues is starting the ad campaign for Aiwa products in India. The television campaign will start in December 1998. Aiwa products are imported now. (rk)

PEPSI TO QUENCH SUMMER THIRST WITH `MORE'

Pepsi Foods Ltd (PFL) has drawn up ingenious plans to raise its market share in Bangalore. Currently, it holds 52 percent share in the Bangalore market and is a leader in colas, orange, clear lime sodas and mango drinks. PFL has roped in many shop owners for marketing its products. It is offering them vending machines on lease. Around 250 vending machines sell around 100 cups per day. It is also trying to raise its penetration by offering name boards, money to the shop keepers for interior decoration, see- through fridges to huge eating joints and coolers to the small ones. PFL has also started aggressive marketing of the brand through home delivery and replenishment through cycle rickshaws. It has tied up with certain hotels and darshinis by offering a Pepsi free with the lunch orders. It has also organised the Pepsi Youth Cricket Series. PFL has set up a franchisee-owned plant in Dharwad to meet the needs of North Karnataka. (ag)(psr)
