ALGERIA: SUBSEA FIBRE OPTICS CONSORTIUM PROJECT
Article Abstract:
According to Government sources, the project to install new subsea fibre optic cables connecting Algiers and Palma, in the Balearics, is scheduled to begin in September 2001, and be operational in the second quarter of 2002. Costing EUR 16.65mn and 312km long, the project will be carried out by the consortium containing the Algerian Government, France Telecom, Telefonica, and Telecom Italia. Pirelli Submarine Telecom Systems will join the project, and will call upon NEC to supply equipment. The new cable infrastructure, called ALPAL-2, will consist of four pairs of fibre optics, and will progress an initial capacity of 2.5 Gigabits to a maximum 160 Gigabits.
