AUSTRIA: OPTIMISM IN ENGINEERING, STEEL INDUSTRY

The chairman of the Austrian machine-building and steel construction association predicts production by the industry to grow to Sch 173.7bn in year 2000, up from Sch 168.6bn in 1999 and Sch 166.1bn in 1998. Exports are predicted to grow from Sch 112.7bn in 1998 and 117.9bn in 1999 to Sch 122.6bn. The industry is overcoming the crisis in Asia and recording growth in exports to Japan and the US. On the other hand, demand from South America is slack. The industry expects problems in products groups related to the construction sector in year 2000.

AUSTRIA: PRIVATE PENSION SCHEME FOR ENGINEERS
Article Abstract:
As the first occupational group in Austria, architects and consulting engineers have introduced a pension scheme of their own. The pension system is fully independent of state subsidies. Instead of paying the pensions of the retired, those in work save for their own pensions.
