AUSTRIA: CONTRACT FOR MEDICAL INSURANCE CARDS
Article Abstract:
The association of social insurance institutes in Austria has chosen US-based EDS and Orga Kartensysteme of Germany as suppliers of the 8mn medical insurance cards that are to be introduced in Austria in 2003. The costs of the project in the first six years are estimated at less than Sch 1.5bn, but the financing has not been settled yet. Austria's medical insurance funds are expected to record a loss of Sch 5bn in year 2001. The budget does not include costs for the medical insurance cards. The association of social insurance institutes suggests that the state should take a 25% stake in the operating company Chipkarten Betriebs GmbH. The Austrian government is said to be planning to develop the card further into a "citizen's card" with further personal data. Other bidders for the contract were Debis Systemhaus, Siemens and Telekom Austria's subsidiary Datakom, all of which would have cooperated with Austria Card, a company of the Austrian national bank, in producing the cards.
