AUSTRIA: FOREST OWNERS CONCERNED ABOUT NATURA

Article Abstract:

Stefan Schenker, head of the association of private forest owners in Austria, says that the European Union's Natura 2000 programme restricts the use of 15.8% of Austria's forest area. This means an economic loss of Sch 1.4bn. Schenker predicts that in 10-15 years forest enterprises will no longer survive with the revenue from wood alone. He suggests that additional income could be generated with charges for the laying of energy cables or with drinking water supply. Subsidies account for 1.2% of the revenue of Austrian forest owners. While Austria's consumer price index has the doubled since the 1960s, the price of timber paid by sawmills has remained unchanged at Sch 1,000 per solid metre and that of industrial wood at Sch 400. Schenker sees cost-cutting potential in timber hauling and administration by forest owners.

AUSTRIA: CEREAL CROPS DECLINE

Article Abstract:

The Austrian cereal council estimates the country's cereal production in the year to 30 June 2000 to fall by about 30% from the previous year to 3.76mn tonnes. This means the loss of revenue of Sch 1.5bn, of which Sch 500mn results from damage by hail. Grain crops were hit also by drought. AMA estimates the production of brewing barley to fall by 40-50%. Thus half of Austria's annual requirement of 160,000 tonnes of brewing barley has to be covered by imports.
