The German fish restaurant chain Nordsee is to enter the Swiss and northern Italian markets and is currently looking for sites there. The company is also planning to set up a chain of restaurants in eastern Europe. However, the high import duties for sea fish are a hindrance in that region. In Austria Nordsee is to double the number of restaurants from 38 at present. Between 5 and 10 new outlets are to be opened each year. Also a drive-in restaurant is being planned. In 1998 Austrian Nordsee generated a turnover of Sch 707mn. This includes wholesale operations, which were recently merged with those of the Austrian company Cerny.
