AUSTRIA: GROWTH FOR SPAR IN 1999

Article Abstract:

The retail group Spar, which includes Spar, Eurospar, Interspar super- and hypermarkets and Hervis sports equipment stores and is the second-biggest retail group in Austria, recorded a 7.1% increase in consolidated turnover to Sch 38.6bn in 1999. Adjusted for the divestment of Spar-Gastro-Service, the growth rate was 8.1%. The turnover of the Spar organisation including that of the independent Spar retailers grew 4.3% to Sch 45.42bn. The number of Spar, Eurospar and Interspar outlets declined 30 to 1,502, while selling area increased by 42,000 sq.m to 802,857 sq.m. The number of Hervis stores rose from 48 to 55 and their turnover increased 10% to Sch 2.07bn.

AUSTRIA: HERVIS TO EXPAND

Article Abstract:

Hervis, one of Austria's four biggest sports equipment retailers and part of the Spar group, is to raise the number of outlets from 52 to 70 in the next 2-3 years. For 1999 the company expects a turnover of Sch 2.2bn, up from Sch 1.8bn in 1998. The company that is still in the red has revised its product range and is now concentrating more on sports goods. Hervis may open about 40 ski hire outlets in Austria. It is testing such outlets in Gastein, Obertauern and Zell am See. The company estimates that about 20% of Austrians use hired skis.

AUSTRIA: RED BULL GOING OVERSEAS

Article Abstract:

Red Bull, the energy drink producer, is to turn increasingly to overseas markets. The Austrian company that has concentrated mainly on the European market so far, generated a turnover of Sch 7.1bn in the fiscal year to 30 September 1999, up from Sch 3.5bn.
