AUSTRIA: RAILWAY STATION INVESTMENTS CUT BACK

Article Abstract:

OBB has revised downwards its investment plans for railway stations. While 34 projects concerning small and medium-sized railway stations have been put off for another two years, the Austrian national railway company is to concentrate on 8 big railway stations. Beside four stations in Vienna, the projects involve Graz, Innsbruck, Linz and Salzburg. These eight stations account for 50% of "customer contacts" by OBB. Altogether the investments planned in railway stations amount to about Sch 8.4bn. The federal government will contribute about Sch 3bn. OBB is to raise a part of the rest from private investors, which will finance commercial and office developments at railway stations. At Vienna West railway station alone, the investments in the first phase should amount to about Sch 4bn.
