Ultrastructural analysis of the sporozoite of Cryptosporidium parvum

Article Abstract:

The ultrastructure of the protozoon Cryptosporidium parvum's sporozoite was investigated through cryotechnique and energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy. The cryotechnique generated image thick sections of the parasite that preserved cell integrity. In the longitudinal section studied, the cell exhibited the typical conical-shaped apical region which contained most of the organelles. The sporozoite had a lone rhoptry having an organized lamellar body, an absent mitochondria or conventional Golgi apparatus.
