AH-1Z Viper helicopter to re-enter Australian Project Air 87 race

Article Abstract:

Bell Textron Helicopter has been asked to re-submit its bid for the Australian Army's requirement for new armed reconnaissance/fire-support helicopters. Previously, Bell's AH-1Z Viper failed to be shortlisted under the Project Air 87 program in early 1999. The Viper features a four-blade composite main rotor, six underwing hardpoints for a mixture of 70mm rocket pods, Hellfire and Sidewinder missiles and a three-barrel 20mm cannon. The Viper also has greater maximum cruising speed, radius of action, maximum useful load and internal fuel than its predecessor, the AH-1W Cobra.

Air 87 is best chance yet for Europe to break Apache's grip

Article Abstract:

Europe's Agusta A129 Scorpion and Eurocopter's Aussie Tiger are competing with Boeing Co's AH-64 for the Australian Army's A$1.2 billion ($780 million) contract. Australia's Air 87 project is aimed at delivery of 25- 30 armed reconnaissance and fire support helicopters. The program is a chance for Eurocopter to break the market dominance of Boeing Co, whose AH-64 Apache is considered as the best among competing firms.
