Major software projects can fail in three different ways. 'Concorde' type failures involve workable ideas that consume too much time and money. 'Comet' failures are sudden and disastrous, while 'Spruce-Goose' failures result from exaggerated expectations.

Nordstrom is researching the concept of an interactive television system that would allow customers to view items and talk directly to a salesperson before making a purchase. A nationwide fiber optic network would have to be built for the system.
