Ambitious offspring: former PTT subsidiary takes on parent

Article Abstract:

The Bangchak Petroleum Co presents a formidable competition to the Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT) in petroleum wholesale and retail operations. Owned and controlled by PTT until 1984, Bangchak has since recovered from mismanagement and financial troubles under PTT. Profits increased 7% and earnings rose by 51% in 1991. The company has managed to offer competitive prices with the deregulation of oil prices and increase in production capacity. The loosening of government control over the company has also contributed to increasing its competitive edge over PTT.

Change of pilot; civilian management installed at Thai Airways

Article Abstract:

Thai Airways International dispensed with its military-controlled management and appointed a largely civilian board on Sep 7, 1992. It hopes that the new management led by Chatrachai Bunyaananta, the airline's dynamic, former executive vice-president, will revive the airline's sagging image and service quality. Chatrachai is expected to remedy the airlines' poor planning perspectives, staff demoralization and management corruption. Changes have started taking place at Thai Airways and it has stated its intentions of providing flights to Cambodia.

Free-for-all folly: poorly controlled development exacts a price

Article Abstract:

Thailand's Eastern Seaboard Authority's project to develop the southeastern region as an industrial zone has several drawbacks. The proposal involves the setting up of cooperative housing for industrial workers, which are located at an inconvenient distance from the factories. It has neglected the building of schools and hospitals as well as provision of public amenities such as water-supply, transport and communication links, and plans to build golf courses and hotels also reflect lack of planning by the local officials.
